Addressing Salford City Council's challenges

Salford Principal Community Safety Officer, Stephen Kearney noted how the Council began using Hikvision cameras after a house building partner suggested using them to monitor a new housing development. Due to the fact Kearney had not heard of the new cameras he chose not to install them at the housing development, instead he opted to put them on the rooftop of one of their corporate buildings.

Only the next day, CCTV operatives called him to say 'You've got to see this- these are the best cameras we've got!'. From there on in, Salford Council haven't installed any cameras other than Hikvision, and across time, none of the cameras have failed, unlike previous cameras they used.

'Invest to Save' opportunity

Kearey notes that 'Because of the limitations of the cameras (Salford City Council) had used before, we had struggled to provide a true 24 hour, 7 days a week service- just because they weren't able to capture low-light images of the quality that Hikvision's DarkFighter cameras can. It's a win-win all round. It's almost like an invest-to-save opportunity.'

Effective CCTV solutions

Kearey explains that as a local authority, Salford City Council faces numerous challenges when it comes to effective CCTV surveillance monitoring. 'We have to think carefully about our ability to upgrade or replace our existing cameras when those go faulty. And the fact is that Hikvision's cameras are very competitively priced.'

Further implementation

After the success of Hikvision DarkFighter cameras as part of Operation Pandora crackdown, Kearey went on to approach his CCTV operators to get their feedback as to where else would benefit from upgrading to DarkFighter cameras. With this in mind, additional PTZ domes were installed in October 2015 in Eccles Town Centre, replacing older, more conventional surveillance cameras.

Making a real difference

In terms of Salford City Council, these all singing, all dancing CCTV cameras really are making a significant difference to the safety of the city. Staff are able to report incidents to police, enabling them to respond promptly and more efficiency, collate evidence for prosecuting flytippers and through fantastic clarity help save vulnerable missing people by alerting the relevant authorities.
