CCTV has been introduced to control and enforce animal welfare laws

This year, the government will be actioning new rules to ensure abattoirs and slaughterhouses in England put into place CCTV surveillance in all areas of their property where livestock are held.

These changes in animal welfare laws have created a sudden shift in how abattoirs must record data. Further to the introduction of CCTV systems, owners of abattoirs must also provide unrestricted access to Food Standards Agency vets in the event of a review.

If abattoirs are found to be in breach of this, or CCTV systems are not present, it could result in a welfare enforcement notice, the suspending of staff licenses or even criminal investigation.

"Have you taken the right steps for your business to be compliant with new animal welfare rules?"

Abattoir CCTV Systems

What steps can be taken to ensure your abattoir is complying with the new animal welfare laws? And which CCTV system do you need?

Choosing a CCTV system can be very daunting, with hundreds of different models, features, prices and technologies to consider. Much like many commercial environments, abattoirs and slaughterhouses have specialist requirements that can be addressed when choosing the right CCTV camera.

Step 1 - Obtain expert advice

One of the first steps you can take is ask the advice of the experts. The National Security Resource works with a number of fire and security companies across the UK, all of which have proven themselves to be specialists in their industry.

Step 2 - Choosing the right CCTV system

Depending on the size and complexity to your property, you may require a more complex system compared to others. Many CCTV systems can be found on the internet for cost effective sums, but simply lack the range, clarity, performance or features that a professional CCTV system could provide you with. If image quality does not meet the standards, your investment could inevitably be a waste of time and money.

Step 3 - Tailoring the system to your requirements

Choosing the right camera is as important as the installation. In todays age of technology, installing your CCTV system yourself could seem a reasonable step, however without the right installation your CCTV could lose quality, gain interference or even fail to work. The best route is to speak with your local NSI Gold security company and ask their advice.

Choosing a professional installation not only ensures your investment is installed correctly, but can also open the door to a range of features over-and-above what you may have been able to achieve yourself. A professional can also provide advice on how best to record and store CCTV footage.

Speak to a specialist for advice

Failure to comply to the new laws can result in heavy fines, suspending of licenses or even criminal investigation. It is important that the task to install new CCTV surveillance measures falls to the professionals to ensure you are compliant. The companies we work with always have their doors open to provide specialist advice - many of which can specify a cost effective Abattoir CCTV system without compromising on quality.
