Fly tipping and encampment is not abnormal in Britain today and are common problems we face, fly tipping alone accounts for £58 million in clean up costs each year and a further £16.9 million on charging these criminals.

16% of traveller caravans are parked unlawfully each year and their total number 22,792 caravans only keeps increasing year on year at an average of 1,365. This lack of authorised pitches means that travellers are forced to go on to private and public land, it is not unlikely for them to break fences and gates to gain entry.
Survey the premises
The Police Fly tipping and Encampment guide presents some key points to avoid your land being spoiled by pollution and mistreatment however it does not give any clear solutions. The key point they come across is if you don't let the offenders gain entry then you can't fall victim. This is a necessity to keep them out but depending on the land it may be very difficult to achieve an impenetrable perimeter. Another factor they shed light on is that should you survey your site before making any changes to security, assessing exactly what it is that you want to protect the most. Then start with the perimeter fencing and move inwards applying as many features to deter and catch trespassers.

Furthermore, the Police express the view that guards are a good solution but may be expensive, they go on to say that a guard is a good deterrent however may be expensive and no more useful than a smart alarm system. If you do employ guards however please make sure they know to call 999 in an emergency and do not take matters into their own hands, this can become aggressive and dangerous very quickly.
Moreover, the Police advise you design your space so it is less susceptible, obviously industrial land, farm land and those areas that are quieter will be targeted by fly tippers nevertheless, if you make the premises look occupied, it will deter offenders.
Making the premises look occupied is not difficult, parking vehicles in the forecourt and keeping lights on a timer are just some examples. The Police also state that protecting the buildings is also a good deterrent, buildings closer to the perimeter are more attractive to the delinquent and therefore more susceptible to break-ins (particularly illegal raves in industrial areas).
Forensic Marking
Forensic marking solutions are now another security option, solutions such as smartwater use unique DNA codes to mark valuable assets so if they go missing they are easily traced, offenders know smartwater well and will avoid premises with visible signage. DNA sprays have also been developed as well to be integrated with smart alarm systems and activated when a door or window alarm is sounded. These DNA sprays are designed to be invisible and can't be washed off, the solution will stay on the culprit for a number of months meaning that in a Police line-up they will find the person in question.
