School Lockdown Systems

What is a lockdown alert system? Do I need one?

Providing a clear, audible and visual lockdown alert is essential for protecting students and staff in an emergency. Using an existing fire bell to announce class changes as well as other emergency alerts can cause confusion and goes against government recommendations for lockdown procedures.

In the event that a violent intruder is on-premises, the last thing you want is students and staff rushing outside to gathering points because of the fire bell sounding.

Multiple uses and applications

School Lockdown Alarms

The solution – smart alert systems

To solve the issue, there is a number of top manufacturers that provide dynamic lockdown systems which broadcast a unique alert. Available with a number of trigger methods, including multi-button control panels, wireless remote controls, GSM signalling and mobile/pc applications. Each is able to enable specific alarms across the entire site.

Benefits include:

Unique broadcasting of separate alerts for fire alarms, class changes, lockdowns, evacuations and panic alarms

A range of trigger methods can be customised depending on the unique requirements of the environment

Wireless systems can use a mesh system allowing up to 16km of signal range

Partial lockdown

A partial lockdown event is where activity outside the school would cease, staff and pupils would remain inside with external doors locked. Generally, free movement would be permitted depending on the reason for lockdown.

Full lockdown

In a full lockdown situation, pupils would return to an agreed location and remain there. External and internal doors would be locked as well as windows closed and blinds drawn where possible.

Do you know your responsibilities?

As part of the Ofsted inspection, schools will be asked if they have a Lockdown Policy – this could be a simple document with guidelines. Until recently schools didn’t have to have a Lockdown system installed. However, Ofsted now advocates dedicated lockdown alarms to be in place, distinctive to the sound of the fire alarm.
