Causes of False Alarms
PIRS
When fitting PIRs, the placement is extremely important. Direct sunlight, damp areas and heat sources (e.g. radiators) can cause a PIR sensor to trigger a false alarm; therefore it is advised to keep them away from these areas.
EMI & RFI
As previously mentioned, powered detectors (such as PIRs) can have false alarms triggered by mains spikes, which are caused by sudden changes in the mains supply to the control panel. These can be stopped by fitting Spike Suppressors. Some PIRs can also be susceptible to RFI. This is usually caused by local radio transmitters or mobile phones.
An easy way to test against RFI is to make a call whilst holding your mobile next to your PIR/motion detector. If the alarm is triggered, you can fit an RFI Stabiliser to prevent a false alarm in the future.
