| How do burglar alarms work? |
| A burglar alarm will always contain the following basic components, regardless of how complex the system may be. |
| Detection sensors |
| A sensor, typically PIR, that detects movement, pressure, shock or is triggered by an opening door through magnetic contacts. |
| Control Panel |
| A control panel acts as the brains of the system and connects either wirelessly or through wired connections to each detector and siren. |
| Alarm Bell Box |
| Situated generally outside the property, the alarm bell box emits a powerful siren and LED signal in the event of an alarm trigger. |

| Types of detection sensors |
| The majority of alarm systems have at least two detection device types and the most common sensors used are: |
| PIR Movement Detectors |
| PIRs or Passive Infra-Red Receivers are commonly fitted internally and externally around a property to detect movement. They are a proven and effective method of detecting an intrusion and can be tailored to each application - many companies also offer 'pet friendly' detectors to avoid false alarms. |
| Magnetic Contacts |
To secure accessible doors and windows around the property, magnetic contacts are fitted to each door/window and frame. Once the alarm is armed, if these contacts are separated, the alarm will sound.
Other sensors can be put to use on windows, such as Shock Detectors that can alert you if a glass pane is broken or forced open. |

| Using an alarm control panel |
The alarm control panel is where you activate and deactivate the alarm system. Depending on your alarm model, this can be achieved through a number of options, such as by entering a pin number, by proximity tag, by key fob or even through your smartphone.
The control equipment inside is the brain of the alarm system and monitors each peripheral and detectors for intruders. If activated, it will signal the bell box and depending on your options, contact you, a keyholder or even the Police for response. |

| What happens when my alarm system is activated? |
| When activated, an alarm can be tailored to perform certain acts. These will be set by the original installer and can be updated to suit your requirements. There are two main forms of alarm systems; Audible Only and Monitored. The latter provides you with a 24/7 solution to watch over your property, even when you aren't there yourself to respond. |
| Audible Only Alarms |
| Audible only alarms are self-contained and rely on the bell box to deter intruders from the premises. In some cases, the alarm can also contact keyholders using a built-in 'text dialler'. |
| Monitored Alarm System |
| A monitored alarm is connected to an alarm receiving center. In the event of an activation, professional operators will assess your alarm, clarify if it is a genuine incident and respond efficiently by either contacting keyholders, or your local Police force. |
